Santiago, 30 March 2015 – The New City model by Grupo Castrosua is one of the products that has been distinguished by the jury of the prestigious Red Dot Award: Product Design. The Red Dot Award is comparable to the Academy Awards for design and its purpose is to recognise the quality and innovation of designers and manufacturers in the creation of new household and professional products.

Through this distinction, Grupo Castrosua is part of a select group of companies and individuals that have received the Red Dot Award, created in 1955, and that includes such well-known brands such as Apple, Peugeot, Audi and Lamborghini, or other important designers such as Philippe Starck or Peter Schreyer.

Nearly 5,000 proposals submitted

The model New City by Grupo Castrosua was one of the 4,928 groundbreaking proposals from 56 different countries, which aspired to this year’s prestigious Red Dot Award. A jury consisting of people from 25 countries among which were specialized journalists, prestigious designers and academics related to this area of activity chose the vehicle by Grupo Castrosua as one of the winners of the best Red Dot Product Design in the vehicles product category.

The jury grants the awards without having any information about the companies and based only on criteria related to innovation, aesthetics, utility, functionality, or the impact of the design presented.

The award ceremony will take place during a gala that will be held on 29 June in Essen, Germany.

About the New City

The New City bus, winner of the Red Dot Award, is Grupo Castrosua’s new proposal for city transport. Its new bodywork blends technology and modernity, creating a bus with strong lines and aesthetics with character. An avant-garde approach with distinctive value that leads the way for the future of city buses.

Safety, functionality and comfort are priority in its design. The state-of-the-art LED daytime lights in the C-shape for Castrosua, are the symbol of the brand’s identity. These exterior lights endow the product with its unique character. The windshield, with its surrounding design, improves the driver’s visibility. The improved ergonomics of the New City’s cockpit provide optimal working conditions for the driver.

This model offers significant benefits to operators and users. It includes improvements in its active safety system, such as an optical and acoustic signal for moving doors; state-of-the-art devices such as USB connectors or retro illuminated pushbuttons, among others. The vehicle can be mounted on any chassis, either with diesel or CNG propulsion and lengths ranging between 10.5 and 18 meters.

The New City, which was launched a few months ago, already has 15 units operating in cities such as Gijón or Vigo.

Technical development

In addition to its aesthetics, the New City also stands out for its powerful technical development and structural framing. Taking advantage of the launching of the Euro VI, the vehicle seeks to reduce weigh while maintaining its unmistakable robustness. In the product development process, new materials have been introduced, as well as methods for the design and validation of innovative solutions. These have resulted in the significant reduction of the vehicle’s unladen weight, while maintaining the structural resistance and firmness characteristic of Castrosua buses.
