- BYD and Castrosua announce a new collaboration to build 12-meter eBuses for the Spanish market
- The zero-emission electric buses combine the specialized knowledge of both companies, integrating BYD’s core technologies, including its advanced chassis and electric powertrain, with Castrosua’s award-winning NELEC bodywork
- The collaboration focuses on offering public transport tailored to Spanish customers.
BYD, the world’s leading manufacturer of new energy vehicles (NEVs) and electric batteries, has signed a framework agreement with Grupo Castrosua, a specialist in the development and manufacturing of bus and coach bodies in Spain. BYD and Castrosua will collaborate to produce environmentally friendly, customized 12-meter eBuses in Spain, specifically for the Spanish market. The BYD-Castrosua 12-meter eBuses will be built on BYD’s advanced chassis with an electric powertrain and will incorporate Castrosua’s NELEC bodywork to offer high-value-added electric transport solutions to Spanish customers.
With over 27 years of experience in battery research and development, BYD is the only NEV producer that has developed its own powertrain systems, power batteries, automotive semiconductors, drive motors, and motor control systems, integrating the entire bus ecosystem for greater operational efficiency. This technology is combined with Castrosua’s expertise in the design and assembly of innovative bodywork, in a partnership that will utilize the award-winning, highly customizable NELEC bodywork. Like BYD, Castrosua has a long history in the sector, with all the resources and professional technology to drive the widespread adoption of electric buses in Spain.
The strategic cooperation between BYD and Castrosua is committed to manufacturing tailor-made products that meet the demands of the Spanish market through a framework agreement for the development, manufacturing, and sale of electric buses, initially focusing on Class I and Class II buses for urban and suburban use. The agreement will also jointly offer high-quality and efficient after-sales service, with professional and customer-oriented technical support from both parties, as well as the supply of spare parts. Thanks to extensive market experience and a shared vision of electromobility, this alliance is ideally positioned to maximize the effectiveness of the collaboration and explore new opportunities to expand the product range in the future.
The first 12-meter BYD-Castrosua eBus is already under development and will soon be available to operate under CE regulations. BYD’s latest chassis, with increased range, optimized battery life, and ultra-safe performance, will be adapted by Castrosua for the assembly of its NELEC bodywork. The 12-meter BYD-Castrosua eBuses will soon join urban electric fleets, thus contributing to the transition towards the electrification of public transport in Spain.
Javier Contijoch, Vice President of Sales of BYD Europe eBus, said: “It is a great honor for BYD to bring world-leading technology to Spain and to launch the alliance with Castrosua. We highly value our local collaborations, and it is especially significant that customized eBuses will be manufactured locally in Spain for Spanish customers. Together, we are poised to expand zero-emission electric bus fleets throughout Spain, providing a cleaner environment for Spaniards. BYD firmly believes in the benefits of this alliance to accelerate the transition to electrification, and we appreciate the opportunity to partner with other respected bus body specialists in Europe.”
Beatriz Castro, CEO of Grupo Castrosua, says: “For Grupo Castrosua, it is a satisfaction to reach this agreement and therefore to add the multinational BYD as a strategic ally for the manufacture of urban and suburban electric buses. CASTROSUA and BYD are joining forces with the clear objective of offering the market a different proposal, highly customized and innovative solutions. Together, we continue to bet on global and flexible electromobility, with which we also respond to real and specific needs. This is why the professionalism with which both our teams are working will ensure that we have a product range developed from the outset in this regard.”
